Aim: To Research Local Products, Events & Businesses And To See How They Are Relavent To A Target Audience.

This lesson I have been looking at local magazines that may or may not have local gigs/concerts at local bars/clubs.

The magazine I have chosen is called 'The Brighton Source'.

On the back of this certain issue of the magazine, there is an advert for a local club/bar called 'Coalition' - this bar/club is on the Brighton seafront, it is well known and has its own website that you can check using this link - 'http://www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/coalition' - Their website has calendar of the events going on in their bar.

The advert itself shows what is going on in the month of September, the design of the advert is simply laid out so you can easily tell what is going on when, it says what date the event is happening etc.

Aim: To Consider How Magazine Staff are Divided in Terms of Skills and to Identify Which Skills are Needed to do Particular Jobs.

The Publishing Industry As A Whole Employs Over 195,000 People!
50,000 People Work In Journals and Magazines
 - See http://www.creativeskillset.org
 - YouTube The Channel 'The Intern Book' (No Spaces!)

There Aren't Really Any Differences In The Jobs, They Both Have Similar Job Roles e.g. Editor & Advertising Sales Director.

Both Magazines Word Their Staff Differently Therefore It Is Quite Hard To Compare The Different Jobs.

The Q Magazine, Which Is The Set Of 3 Pictures Has Many More People Listed, Whereas Metal Hammer Seems To List Just The Most Important People. For Example;
Q EDITORIAL: Editor, Senior Editor, Art Editor and About 6 Other Ones.
METAL HAMMER EDITORIAL: Editor, Production Editor - More General.

Both Magazines

Magazine Pre-Production

Pre-Production Techniques

  • Finance - Costs for your magazine to work e.g. staff salaries, printing costs & office renting costs.
  • Time - Do a monthly calendar stating what needs to be done and when by, therefore you have everything done by the final deadline ready for printing.
  • Personnel - Your personnel are the people who work for you e.g. journalists, writers, photographers, editors, publishers & proof readers.
  • Facilities - The resources you use e.g. pre-production equipment, production equipment (cameras, computers, photo studios) & post production equipment.
  • Materials - The stuff you use to make the magazine, e.g. paper, ink & cutting equipment.
  • Contributors - The people in your magazine e.g. artists and bands.
  • Locations - Places you visit for your articles/photoshoots e.g. live gigs/concerts & photo studios or outside locations.
  • Codes of Practise/Regulations - Basically all the legal stuff e.g. location permissions, copyrighting, press complaints commission & public liability insurance.
  • Planning - Finally, all the ideas you have in order to make your magazine e.g. title name, colour scheme, genre & artists featured.
