Magazine Photography

Larger magazines will employ photographers or have one off freelancer journalists.
The other sources for photographs are picture libraries and PR companies.
The latter can be useful for things such as studio shots of individuals or products that may be covered the magazine.
The role of a photo editor is to make sure the photographs are up to scratch.
The role is very important to the magazine company as photos NEED to look decent in order to attract more readers/viewers.

For homework I have been asked to choose one photograph (celebrity) of my choice and analyse why I chose the image.

The image I have chosen is this image of the artist 'Marina & The Diamonds'

The reason I chose this image is because not only do I really like this artist but because this image is a very unusual one of her. This image shows her some kind of Native American tribal hat or head covering, this shows that the photographer might have wanted her to stand out a bit?

She is trying to look quite seductive in this image but I have showed people the image and they have said that even though she is trying she isn't looking seductive enough.

You can also tell that this image may have been tampered with to make her appearance more attractive.

This image uses the 'rule of thirds', as you can see in the same image but with the rule of thirds 'grid' her mouth is the central square, therefore is the main focus. Her actual face is the middle row which also tells us that her face is the main focus point.

As you can see, she is in the middle and the background on the sides, knowing that people mainly look in the middle of photographs, the photographer has placed her in the middle.

In conclusion, this photo is very effective as it does have the rule of thirds and it is very simple and attractive, which is what most readers/viewers want to see.
